----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
引用 "This police drama contains adult language and scenes with partial nudity. Viewer discretion is advised."
The potential images these words created alone caused more controversy before this show ever aired. The "Bible Belt" was up in arms and no-one had ever seen the show. In most of the southern states the local ABC affiliates refused to carry the show. This is a shame. Aside from a "little" bare flesh and a couple of harsh words, they are missing out on a quality television show.
Late during the first season, Steven Bochco said during an acceptance speech at the 20th Annual People's Choice Awards,
引用 "In spite of those who seek to legislate what we can and cannot see on our own television sets in the privacy of our own homes. NYPD Blue has succeeded because the American people, properly so, prefer to judge for themselves."
The show was voted "favorite new television dramatic series" and "favorite television dramatic series" during the 20th Annual People's Choices Awards the first year it was eligible. The shows has been nominated for and won numerous awards. Check out this IMDb link for more information. Most notably the series has been nominated for an Emmy 80 times and has won 20 of those times and Dennis Franz has claim to four of those statues.
Before this series, some of the stars had an affiliation with producer Steven Bochco from his previous highly acclaimed series Hill Street Blues. David Caruso guest starred in two episodes. And during the 3rd season, Dennis Franz guest starred as Det. Sal Benedetto in 5 episodes and was killed off in his last appearance. Franz officially joined the cast in that show's 6th season as Lt. Norman Buntz and stayed with the show until it ended. Then the Buntz character was brought back for a short-lived comedy series called Beverly Hills Buntz the following season. This series didn't last because it was erratically scheduled as a fill-in and then couldn't build an audience. James McDaniel also appeared in a Hill Street Blues episode and then also appeared in Steven Bochco's attempt at something new, a musical police drama called Cop Rock. When Caruso left early on in the series, another Bochco veteran was called upon; Jimmy Smits who played Victor Sifuentes on Bochco's L.A. Law was brought in to play new detective Bobby Simone.
While other actors have left with big screen ambitions, two actors have left the series to move onto other Bochco created programs. In 1996 there was an attempt to launch a comedy that featured as one of the characters in the ensemble PAA John Irvin played by Bill Brochtrup. Public Morals only aired one episode and was pulled. I would hesitate to call it a spin-off, since only one (at that time) minor character from this series appeared on it, but I suppose an argument could be made. After all, Dennis Franz did take his Norman Buntz character from Hill Street Blues to Beverly Hills Buntz, a comedy series that lasted much longer than Public Morals did. In 2001 Kim Delaney left this series (with a loophole that would allow her to come back) to star in Philly. Since this series seems to still making respectable ratings, it is unlikely Det. Diane Russell will ever return full time to the 15 Squad of detectives, but you never know. She made one special appearance in an episode at the end of the 10th season.
While this cast has undergone a rotation of lead actors, Dennis Franz has remained the glue that I think holds this series together. Should he ever leave, I think the series will come to an end.

Plot Outline: The gritty details of life as a member of a New York City police unit.
User Comments: Fantastic Police Drama!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plot Summary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Each week viewers see the gritty reality of life in a New York City Police unit as the officers go about their work with a grim determination. Two partners, Detectives Andy Sipowicz and John Kelley (later replaced by Bobby Simone), are the central characters in this weekly police drama, and personify very different approaches to their difficult job. Sipowicz's brash gruffness (covering an emotional vulnerability) is tempered by the precise and controlled demeanor of the two partners with whom he has worked. NYPD Blue is one of the best shows on TV. I love watching it every week. Better than it, only ER and Babylon 5.
The characters are incredible. The scenarios are amazing. I love all the New York shots from one scene to another while we hear these amazing songs. The theme song is fantastic and the scenes in it are extremely compelling, especially the building that implodes and the subway scenes. The people say a lot of bad words and we see a lot of nude shots of the actors. This is just a mere display how NYPD Blue displays the gritty reality we exist. It's very realistic!
Dennis Franz brought life to Andy Sipowicz. He's amazing and I feel for the guy. He didn't talk to Andy Jr., became an alcoholic, got sober, married Sylvia, had a new son (Theo), lost Andy Jr., got back to drinking, had prostrate cancer, lost his partner John Kelly in a scandal, lost Bobby Simone to a fatal heart infection and lost his wife recently. How much more can the man endure?
David Caruso did a good job on John Kelly until he left the show. Jimmy Smits also did a good job with Bobby Simone. Too bad his four-year contract ended. His departure was hard to watch. Long live Bobby! Hearts and Souls must win the emmys which's been nominated to.
Rick Schroder is doing a great job with Danny Sorenson. He's very different. Unlike Bobby, his life is an open book and he's more hot-headed like Andy.
The other cops are good, especially Gordon Clapp and Kim Delaney. Andrea Thompson is the finest addition to the precinct. She's the first independent female on the show. I loved to see Bill Brochtrup back in his hole of "upstairs" John Irvin.
As for the show itself, Season 1 was fantastic! Season 2 was good, but awful in comparison to other seasons. Season 3 was way better! Season 4 was good at first, but soon got bad stories. Season 5 started poorly, but soon became a good season. Season 6 was magnificent! The best one so far! So much has happened since October. I hope NYPD Blue returns with Season 7 as soon as possible.
Outstanding job David Milch and Steven Bochco!
